History

The history of platinum meetings has been lasting for almost eight decades. The I Meeting was organized in 1943 in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) on the initiative of the management of the State Refinery and was devoted mainly to the analysis of precious metals. In 1945, the II Meeting was held in Sverdlovsk dealing in fact with the same problems, but with the participation of the country's leading scientists I.I. Chernyaev, N.K. Pshenitsyn, O.E. Zvyagintsev, which made review reports on the technology, analysis, and application of platinum metals. The III Meeting was held in Moscow, at the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, 65 years ago (in 1954). Subsequently, the interval between the Meetings was three to four years: the IV Meeting was held in Sverdlovsk in 1957, V Meeting - in Novosibirsk in 1960, VI Meeting - in Krasnoyarsk in 1963. All of them were called “Meetings on the Analysis of Noble Metals”; their representativeness had been increased but they focused on the problems of analysis. Only in 1966 in the course of the VII Meeting held in Norilsk, the program included topics on chemistry and technology of noble metals. Since that time, the Meetings received the status of “All-Union Conferences on Chemistry, Analysis, and Technology of Noble Metals”: VIII Meeting (1969, Novosibirsk), IX Meeting (1973, Krasnoyarsk), X Meeting (1976, Novosibirsk). Since 1979 (XI Meeting, Leningrad, now St. Petersburg), it was decided to call all subsequent Meetings named after Chernyaev in honor of the special merits of Academician Ilya Ilyich Chernyaev. In the framework of the XII, XIII, and XIV Meetings (Moscow, Sverdlovsk, Novosibirsk, respectively), reports with the heading “for official use” were discussed at the technology section. At the XIV Meeting, a poster session was organized for the first time. The XV Chernyaev Meeting (held in 1993 in Moscow at the Kurnakov Institute) is significant in that it was the first congress of platinists organized in difficult post-Soviet times. XVI Meeting (1996, Ekaterinburg) and subsequent Meetings on Platinum Metals became International: XVII Meeting (2001, Moscow) and XVIII Meeting (2006, Moscow). Since 2006, they have been called the “International Chernyaev Conference on Chemistry, Analytics, and Technology of Platinum Metals”. The XIX, XX, and XXI Conferences were successfully held in Novosibirsk (2010), Krasnoyarsk (2013), and Yekaterinburg (2016).
Over the past years, generations of scientists and engineers rolled which devoted his lives to studying the unique elements of the platinum group. For them, the Chernyaev Meeting is a landmark event, and its goals remain unchanged: a review of the results of fundamental and applied research in the field of chemistry, analysis, technology, and application of platinum metals and gold, compounds and materials based on them as well as discussion of general trends and prospects for their development.
